                       16 August 2014

                     Happy Independence Day

Happy belated Independence Day. To be truthful, I am not really a patriotic sort of a guy. I know... I know...its my country, my motherland....blah,blah,blah. Whatever dude.I know its my country and should give my life for it and i am sorry but I really don't feel that way and I can't really change my feelings as it isn't really in my hands. Alright, let's not stray form our topic, its mid august, there is nothing much to do. Monsoon has finished and is planning its retreat, summer annuals have bloomed and are read for seed collection, grasses are growing fast and the lawn needs to be mowed, weeds are taking over the garden and need to be dealt with preety soon.
we may not realize it but mid august is a critical time for our garden. It is the perfect time to prepare compost for garden. Also the nurseries are filled to the brim with perennials. There is no better time to plant perennials than august. Another important thing to remember is that winter is not very far so it might be practical to decide about your winter annuals and to make plans about garden, its features and its layout.

                                    Plumed Cockscomb

A beautiful summer annual with flame like colourful spires of flowers ia another all time favourite. It is considered to be an easy to grow plant but i nevre had luck with it. Last year I bought 4-5 plants of dwarf variety but none survived for more than a week. This year i bought 12 plants and only 1 survived over the summer.
.
Aren't these just adorable?? Their season is nearly over but do not forget to get some of these beauties for the next year. On a side note their flowers can be dried, they do not loose their colour

              Rain Lilies

My Rain Lilies are blooming, its august after all. These are one of my new favourites.
I know that they are verry common but the fact that they are found on every 7th house on the street does not mean tha they are easy to find!
I have been looking for them for last 5 months with little luck. I got white from a family friend , pink from a remote cornenr in a very large nursery, sharing pot with a dalily and as for yellow, the search continues...
An interesting fact about them is that they are bog plant. Also they look very beautiful in a bunch.
Their are few plants that flower in august so it wouldn't be wise to let them go if you come across a clump of these beauties but then it is your wish, as for me, i will get all the plants in can to add colour to my garden in monsoon.
